Science

Choose a subject:

Scientists at Front Lawn will develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through biology, chemistry and physics.

They will develop an understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them.  We will equip them with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

Content and Sequencing

  • Science, along with most Foundation subjects are linked with the overarching whole school topic and the individual topic of each class.
  • Basic advancing and deep tasks are planned according to the Key stage phase the children are in and their ability to tackle tasks.
  • Science is taught in a Research, Skills, Plan, Make, Evaluate sequence.

Retrieval Practise

Science Dashboard – Parts of the Science curriculum need to be taught regularly to ensure that this is embedded within their long-term working memory. We have created dashboards that cover elements of Biology, Chemistry and Physics such as the parts of a plant, parts of a circuit and parts of the human body

This learning is carefully planned so that it supports children’s progress in this subject. The children are exposed to these dashboards at least twice a week. This ensures that the children are retrieving this key knowledge regularly.

More able Scientists

The more able Scientist at Front Lawn are offered a ‘Scientist experience’ each term.  They have visited the local secondary school to do exciting experiments with a secondary school teacher and are planning a trip to the Science Museum in London.

Learning Environments

We ensure our learning environments are immersive and topic driven.  We have had Space themed classroom and ones that look like a science lab.  Children wear white coats that turn them into scientists when they are experimenting.

Assessment

Science is assessed each Term.  Teachers identify who is exceeding expectations and children who are not meeting the expected standard.  Teachers will be mindful of any significant groups who are not making progress and ensure they keep a close eye on them the following term.

We love visiting our local secondary school to explore different scientific concepts in their labs!
