History

Choose a subject:

Historians at Front Lawn will be curious about the past and ask questions about it. They know about important people and events and use different sources of evidence to research and form opinions.  They will be able to evaluate different sources of evidence.  We will continually reflect, think and debate about the Historical events and sources we explore.

Content and Sequencing

  • History, along with most Foundation subjects are linked with the overarching whole school topic and the individual topic of each class.
  • In term 1, the topic ‘Heroes and Villains’ has a History focus for every class.
  • Topics ‘designed’ with relevance in mind.  For example, the Titanic topic leads on to children understanding how the class system was clear during the sinking.
  • History is taught in a Research, Skills, Plan, Make, Evaluate sequence.

KS1 History Exemplar

Retrieval Practise– Important figures or events in History that we think the children need to have good general knowledge on.  Linked to Our History in Yr R, key famous people throughout History in Year 1, significant Historical events in Year 2, important figures in the British Monarchy in Year 3, great explorers in Year 4, the Space Race in Year 5 and War in Year 6.

Each Year Group has a timeline displayed in their classroom.  They add dates involving significant events and people as they learn about them.  These timelines move up with each Year Group and they are regularly discussed when comparing events and in reference to chronology.

Learning Environments

We ensure our learning environments are immersive and topic driven.  Our classrooms have looked like Henry VIIIs palace, the Bakery on Pudding Lane, a World War One trench and the basement of the Houses of Parliament.

More Able Historians

The more able Historians at Front Lawn are offered a ‘History explores trip’ each term .  They have attended a local war museum on D-day and The City Museum to learn about the History of Portsmouth.

Assessment

History is assessed each Term.  Teachers identify who is exceeding expectations and children who are not meeting the expected standard.  Teachers will be mindful of any significant groups who are not making progress and ensure they keep a close eye on them the following term.

As historians we enjoy researching important people and events.
