Maths

Choose a subject:

Mathematicians at Front Lawn will become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice, Pupils will develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

They will be given opportunities to reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, developing an argument and using mathematical language.  Pupils will solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems.

Content and Sequencing

  • Each lesson begins with a Fluent in 5 session - a chance  for the children to practise knowledge that has been taught in previous units.
  • The  ‘previously’ session  is a short reminder of the knowledge that has led to the objective they are about to do.
  • The objective is shared and the knowledge in order to teach the objective is taught
  • The the children have an opportunity to practise
  • Once the children are confident, they apply the knowledge they have learnt to reasoning and problem solving activities

Mathematics Dashboard – Parts of the Maths curriculum need to be taught regularly to ensure that this is embedded within their long-term working memory. We identified objectives from the Medium Term Plans that were best taught in this way such as times tables, number bonds and telling the time.

Learning Environments

We ensure we have working walls in each classroom that reflects the unit of work we  are currently studying.

More Able Mathematicians

The more able Mathematicians at Front Lawn are offered to attend an able Maths Day every half term.  Our most able mathematicians staff and run our school bank.

Assessment in Maths

Each child from Year 1- 6 are part of a club (1-99)  Each club is associated with number bonds or times tables.  Children regularly practise the skills associated with their club ready for a test on Friday.  If they are successful in their test, they move to the next club.

Teachers analyse the NTS  test every term.  They identify some objectives from the test that the class need some additional support or focus on.  These are then practised daily as part of their fluent in 5.

Every lesson begins with a ‘previously’ session - a short reminder to the knowledge that has led to the objective they are about to do.

As mathematicians, we are always looking for ways our Maths can help us in the real world.
